Oregon Child Abuse Prevalence Study (OCAPS)

In collaboration with the Oregon Child Abuse Prevalence Study, CSAW conducted informational interviews with youth and adults to understand the gaps in preventing child maltreatment, focusing on the intersections between punitive systems and violence in our local context. This effort leverages community expertise to create a better understanding of lived experience and to center youth more deeply in the work.

Building Youth-Centered Programming

In spring 2023, CSAW’s Prevention Education and Advocacy for Childhood Empowerment (PEACE) workgroup organized to actively address the culture of silence around child maltreatment. 

The goal: To find solutions that consider cultural and contextual factors that are historically overlooked in this work. 

A summary, based on feedback from 116 conversations with Lane County youth and adults who work with youth, provides insights on the strengths, needs, and gaps of our community and offers key recommendations. This work informs the Lane County Violence Prevention Coalition’s efforts and other local and statewide prevention endeavours. It has also led to the creation of the Youth Advisory Council. Youth Advisory Council

As part of the 90by30 Initiative, CSAW’s Youth Advisory Council provides recommendations that inform all aspects of CSAW’s work, develops context-specific projects, and builds skills to become better violence prevention advocates in Lane County communities. 

CSAW's Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is currently recruiting rural Lane County youth (ages 14-19) to join the council. The YAC meets weekly on Zoom and periodically in person. If you, or someone you know, might be interested in learning more you can complete this interest form.

The YAC has developed a resource guide to support young people in finding youth centered resources in their communities. Check out the guide here.

This YAC 2024 Year in Review highlights a year of impactful contributions and initiatives led by our dedicated YAC members. From shaping youth-focused resources to providing invaluable feedback on projects at the Center for Childhood Safety and Wellbeing (CSAW), this document reflects on their collective achievements and celebrates the creativity and passion they bring to our community.

 

CSAW's work is centered around the expertise and recommendations of youth, survivors, and the pursuit of equity promotion.

Trauma Informed School Systems

In a partnership between the Ford Family Foundation, South Coast Education Service District, CSAW and Cultivate, a student-led leadership initiative called the Senate for Safe Schools Safe Schools was formed. 

This student group created two professional development training materials for school staff about the essential components of trauma informed schools and positive school climates.

Students Against Child Abuse (SACA)

As part of the 90by30 initiative, SACA leverages University of Oregon student talent and resources to advance CSAW’s mission, vision and values. SACA serves as a bridge between Lane County youth and the UO student body in efforts to reduce violence in childhood, youth, and early adulthood.

This student-led organization develops resources that are tailored to student experiences and actively promotes the prevention and recognition of interpersonal violence among youth.
